Tell Your Story Journal Page - April 28, 2010 - I Want

"Tell Your Story"

I will be posting a journal page a day! While I'm taking an online class, through Red Velvet Art (RVA), called Tell Your Story. (registration is closed) It is a 6 week class so, I'll be posting one page a day to my blog for the six weeks.

This will be a visual journey of self reflection via mixed media collage and a personal challenge..

~  ~  ~  ~  ~

I chose to use three views on this page as the envelope element can be flipped back & forth.

~  ~  ~  ~  ~

Here's what I've written:
  • I want to travel (top left: over the earth)
  • I want to look at the moon forever (top right: over the image of the moon)
  • I want to learn to illustrate (under the moon image)
  • I want to make beautiful things from hounds tooth (far right edge)
  • I want to doodle... (bottom right: I made a doodle in MS Paint then printed it on to the page. I built the rest of the page around it)
  • I want to love and to be loved (center right: speech bubble)
  • I wan to create art that inspires (center: speech bubble)
  • I want to love myself more (center left: speech bubble)
  • I want to remember the loved ones I have lost... (center & just below the face of the winged leopard baby wearing a crown of silver & leaves)
  • grand ma, grand pa, dad, aunt, grand ma, Andy W, Paul D (bottom right: inside the hearts)
  • I want to write more (across the bottom: next to the stamped envelope shapes)
  • I want to write myself a message today for "future me" to read (left hand side next to striped envelope)
  • I want to become the woman I am destined to be! (left hand side next to striped envelope)
  • The front of the envelope detail says: From yourself in the year 2010
  • The the front of the envelope detail also says: To: Future me. Don't open until 2024
  • The back of the envelope detail says:
     TOPSE
     CRETS
~  ~  ~  ~  ~

* I've made a note regarding this last element (on the envelope back) that says:  I just had to write in gold leaf pen... and use red for the background... hmmmm. I may change it to light yellow like the front ....or maybe I'll write over it in black marker... dunno (yes it's a reference to the movie 23)

~  ~  ~  ~  ~
Ingredients: magazine pages, acrylic wash, pen, ink, store bought & hand carved stamps, gold leaf pen, MS Paint doodle printed with printer ink, cut and torn scrap book paper, heart shaped punch, hole puncher, paper reinforcements.

Tell Your Story Journal Page - April 27, 2010 - Today Felt

"Tell Your Story"

Today Felt... can also be seen on my flickr page (and comments from other class members can be seen there)

 -----
Here's what it says:
Today Felt interesting yet somehow mundane in a good way...

Took my pup to the vet for his rabies shot.

Met with the pest control guy.

Spent the day with my niece, we made art & a cloud pillow.

Clouds are my new happy place.

Also took care of Bill ~ he's got strep throat...

I also listed a new item on my Etsy page a cute yellow bird. I renewed a doll - the Red Haired Fairy doll.

Wrote Emails. Did dishes.

I wanted to add 'cogs' to my cloud so we can 'see' how lightening is made... well, how *I* imagine it's made.

The two kids are from a Ntnl Geographic article on Han's Christen Anderson   ooops... hee-hee! Grimm's Fairy tales.

Someday I'd like to visit Germany & tour the "Trail of the Brothers Grimm". Should be fun! Creepy, good, fun!

-----
Cool tones... Blues! Purples! This my attempt at a monochromatic background... not easy for me!

I felt there wasn't enough space for text so my solution was to use practice paper in the shape of a rain cloud. Of course then I needed raindrops and some lightening...

Then I imagined how lightening is made...
--------
Details about what you're seeing:
The big juicy droplets of water (they look nicer here than in RL) are scrapbook paper & the white reflection part is made with correction fluid pen! (best tool EVER!)

The lightening is yellow marker outlined in gold sparkle pen

I added 'stitching' all around the triangles and around the cloud (really it is just done with permanent marker)

I went over the whole thing with very watered down blue acrylic paint on a paper towel! it gave it a great effect!

I love rain! I love clouds! I even like them when I'm out camping!

I know I'm weird... but I just love the sound of rain on my tent or our tin roof! And the smell and the fresh air!

I also love when the sun shines after a rain. It fills me with wonder and I feel like a kid again! Our planet is an amazing place to live...

Tell Your Story Journal Page - April 26, 2010 - A New Season

"Tell Your Story"

I will be posting a journal page a day! While I'm taking an online class, through Red Velvet Art (RVA), called Tell Your Story. (registration is closed) It is a 6 week class so, I'll be posting one page a day to my blog for the six weeks.

A New Season... can also be viewed on my flickr page (which has comments from other class members).

While making this journal page I kept thinking, "this is a lot of stuff on here... I gotta stop before it gets muddy looking." So it became clear to me that one thing I will attempt to conquer during my six weeks in this class is to make a cohesive piece of art that is not over worked or overwhelmed with elements. I think I don't like seeing 'white space' in my art right now, but eventually I will get to a place I feel comfortable using minimalism and white space effectively and feel that I've been able to express myself clearly. I guess today's page reflects all the stuff in my head - cluttered! Ha ha...

------------------------------

With this page I was experimenting with torn paper, pens, oil pastels, acrylic, dyed paper toweling, stamp and stencil. I layered lots of torn paper and dyed paper toweling.  I also used canceled postage. The curly braces and lines are from a stencil I cut and subsequently destroyed while making this page....

------------------------------

Here is what it says:

Teach how to make: spring rolls, sushi, cut work / stamps, applique, book binding and hats

Make more dolls, bracelets, hats, journals. Post regularly to Etsy & blog!

Learn: design elements for journaling, LESS is MORE, how to work my blog!

Tell Your Story - Journal Page for April 25 - Introduction

This is the start of something new for me...

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
One goal I have is to create a series of loose pages, for several reasons. One important reason is so they scan well for good documentation.

Another reason is to use my skill of book binding to put the journal pages together in one book.

I hope to someday be able to pass it along to my children so they can remember me when I'm gone. I also want to share it with family whom I don't often see as we live all over from NY to Japan to Seattle...

While I may mention how I did a technique here and there. I will not breech RVA copyright to say anything regarding class content.

Maybe I will be inspired to continue a daily post to my blog...? Time will tell.

-------------------------------------------
So, here's my introduction page! It can also be seen on flickr.

And  this is what the page says:
Hello! My name is Stephie! I love dogs. I've never broken a bone. I'm trained as an LPN. I helped a loved one through cancer. I love to carve stamps, make dolls, hats & journals.

I can write backwards pretty well. (and below it I switched hands to write) & lefty  (because I can write with my left  if I concentrate really hard.)

I've been known to raise chickens, bunnys & bees

Favorite food: Sushi
Favorite movie: Tank Girl
Favorite artist: Andy Warhol

(other phrases I wrote:) I love espresso! I love fabric! Ribbon! Swirls! Eyes! Learning always learning!

(there is also a description of the shoes I was wearing it says:) Inside: there is a pirate skull. Outside: my shoes are red plaid & black fabric with silver buckles.

------------
Note: The photo was digitally added added after page was scanned in... it's me in 2002 in Sunshine, Ontario, Canada amongst the luscious Lupines!
----------
Note: There are several hand carved stamps in this piece.

I designed & carved them myself.

One is of human heart: I made a print onto paper then covered that in tape. I soaked the tape in water & scrubbed the paper away. The ink that was left on the tape was a lighter version of the original imprint...

There is also a dog stamp, birds and a bird house...
 ------------------------------
Internal dialog: this intro page was a challenge for me because I don't usually collage. I wanted to take the Tell Your Story class to challenge myself in new creative ways... Doing it I realized that I don't really know how to describe myself... I ended up tearing up the page I wrote the stream of consciousness onto and using the best bits...

April 15, 2010 My home & lifestyle....

Please allow me to properly introduce myself. Surely there is a person behind the Blueberry Blonde persona...

My name is Stephanie and I live with my husband, Bill and a few animals, in the country of WI. A nearby railroad bed, that is now a trail, once was a thriving focal point of the community.

I wanted to document a bit about me and lots about my home because it is a pretty cool place to get to know. We love this home very much. It's is an integral part of our lives. Not just because we live here, but for the location, the inspiration, the history, the fresh air, and the fact we can see stars on a clear night! We hope to raise kids here someday  and I want to be able to remember all the details for them and this will help. I also wanted to share this with family and friends who may not be able to make it out this way for a guided tour.

Our house is a small, 1 1/2 story, Sears, brick home from the 1920's. All of the bricks used to build the home were hauled in on the train that used to run through town. The lumber was locally grown & milled. Our home was put together by local hands nearly 100 years ago.  Talk about DIY / hand made!

Here we see Blue (we call him Blueberry for short) and the house during spring time...

There have been many changes to the house and property over the years.

For example there was a much smaller, brick, building on the property that was moved to a museum! Cool!

and most clever: There is no longer an outhouse! Hurray!

The top floor of the home used to be an apartment, complete with its own kitchen! It had dangerous looking stairway that was perched off of the north house for access. I can't imagine what it must have been like climbing the open stairs in winter... *shivers*

On the main floor there were french doors, where the new hand rail is & at the bottom of the stairs there was a door that opened 3/4 of the and bumped into a wood stove.

Now there is an open themed arrangement that we attempt to delineate the living spaces with furniture. The place has been upgraded with central heat & air. Here we see the main floor: I'm at one end taking the photo & Bill in way at the other end...

Off of the kitchen, which is on the main floor was once a pantry. It's shelves were filled with cooling pies, home grown & canned food, fresh bread & cute kids sneaking fresh donuts. Alas, It is now a small bathroom. The previous owners put a lot of thought & work into renovating & modernizing the home in the many years they were here. We like that it has a sliding door. It hides away this extra room.

Two big projects, the previous owners took on was to add two rooms. One is a side porch with breezeway & and the other is a bedroom or office space.

The breeze way is great because we have a place to hang our coats, store shoes and other outdoor items. The dogs like it, too. It gets a lot of sun, so I made curtains to keep it cool.

One can tell it is an addition as one wall is the brick of the house. Here's Blue on the breezeway. Um... he really likes helping with recycling.

I like the extra bedroom/office not just because we can say we have four bedrooms instead of 3. I like it because it isn't a very obvious space & and that's a nice feature. Once the door is closed, it too, can be hidden away. However, it faces north and I don't think it is very well insulated, because it gets very cold. In part because the central heating doesn't quite make it that far, but keeping the door open helps with this and if it isn't being used closing the door helps save on heating. Here is the extra room with my painting of Collie:

In spring time the flowers are nonstop! The previous owners planted and planted! Here's Bill and Collie modeling amongst the blooms for us...

In winter we heat to around 70 degrees Fahrenheit and it's comfortable. Bill's hobby is dog mushing, so we currently have 15 Alaskan huskies in our life. We either reared them from pups or we adopted them from other mushers... We love them all and couldn't imagine life without dogs...

Most live out of doors year round, except for the two house dogs: father & son --> Collie & Blue.So for the outdoor dogs to live comfortably, Bill has built them wooden houses to live in. He also built this pen for our Velvet rabbit: Pete:

Here's Blue's mum, Hunter, staying cool in her wooden abode. Her original owner came and adopted her back because she is good at racing! Our other dogs are called: Tapio, Hercules, Agnes, Honey, Harry, Bart, Moon, Ziggy, Ginger, Chewbaca, Ben, Bear, Winston.

Our neighbors & friends have a feed store that we buy straw from to fill the animals' houses with, year round. Straw is great for coziness, cleanliness, warmth, insulation and cushion. They even like to lay in it in the summer heat.

We also buy, from the feed store, dog food by the palate every couple months! They gotta eat! We feed them a high energy sport formula that matches their metabolism needs as athletes. We also buy our chicken & bunny food from them.

Our mushing is just a hobby. For those that think 15 dogs is a lot. I must tell ya, that 15 is nothing in the world of competitive mushing --> where eighty dogs is considered a small kennel size! That number of animals takes a small crew and a small fortune for their upkeep. In comparison, for us, fifteen dogs, a bunny and a few chickens is very manageable. Plus each animal can get more one on one time.

Bill likes to take the dogs out jogging in the snow. Here they are just back from a run and you can see what our house looks like in winter! We had the roof done in green tin, in spring it makes the rain sound really pretty and in winter the snow doesn't stick around for very long on it...

And so, the upstairs of our home is no longer an apartment, the home has returned to single family status, the dangerous stairway is long gone, the doorway sealed off and the former upstairs kitchen is now a second, larger bathroom. It's also painted sea foam green? Or maybe pistachio... but we don't mind decorating with orange and gold things helps to offset & compliment it.

We are the only home in the whole area to have two bathrooms! Neighbors are envious when they find out! As many of them have lived in the area all their lives I'll often hear a story about the home, or the previous inhabitants. They may offer a story of having been in the home when they were little or they might never have never been inside the home! I feel it is important for me to offer tours to the neighbors to see what the old place currently looks like and they're usually like " WOW". Not just because it's changed, but because the previous owners did a nice job.

(the previous place we lived in was called the backwards house by locals) we were renting there & looking for something more permanent.

Bill will be glad that I mentioned this: he was loving our brick house for a couple years before it even went on the market. We nearly put a bid on some property and would have had to build our own home or get a cheap prefab... =(  we were dreading it... but needed to move, as our land lord was pushing us to buy or get lost.

One day, though, Bill thought he'd  ride his bike past his dream home so, he could dream that it was for sale for us and he was surprised to see a for sale sign. He cut his bike ride short & came home (to the backwards house) I've never seen him bouncing off the ceiling with so much joy. He was simultaneously walking in the door while, dialing a Realtor and telling me our dream home was for sale!

The house was on the market for one month before we noticed it, so we acted fast. A few days after he saw that it was for sale we were looking at it. The minute we walked in we both said "We'll take it". A few weeks later, in 2008, we finalized paperwork & took possession on my birthday!

The main floor has the original wood flooring, complete with burn marks from the wood stove. Here we see Collie modeling the floor:

The walls have been wall tolerably wallpapered. Here we see Blue and his favorite monkey toy hamming it up:

There is carpet for the stairwell going upstairs and upstairs has the same carpeting... again here is Blue & monkey modeling for us:

The closet doors used to open inward, not sure why but gladly, they've changed most of them to open outwards. The kitchen & upstairs bathroom have a beautiful tin paneled appearance (really it's wallpaper! (same wallpaper in white can be seen in above in the photo showing the extra room, I think they got a good deal on it or something).

The previous owner painstakingly hand painted it after it was installed from those little craft jars of metallic paint!) The result is beautiful! We love it! I like to pretend it's real tin....

They also added a new pantry & updated the cabinets, moldings, appliances, tiles, windows... WOW indeed.

I suppose you're wondering when I'd get around to showing you what my craft studio looks like... here's one storage area to appease you.

I made a hanging storage quilt. To do so I  used several pink, patterned, fat quarters to make a quilted rectangle and bordered it all in plain purple. Then added clear plastic pockets to hold different small things like: measuring tape, tailors chalk, odds and ends, ribbons. I used pink twill tape for tabs across the top & slid a dowel through.

I'm using a mini green house to hold it up. The green house also holds fabrics, purses I've made, projects that need working on or photographing... it's kind of a catch all... Next to it is a bookshelf filled with literature, craft books, sewing books and magazines and one of the closet doors that open outward can be seen to the right of it =)

The land around the house was once used for raising cows and is nutrient rich for a vegetable garden & chickens! Here's what our farm fresh, organic, eggs look like in comparison  with store bought. (sorry about the dark spot on both that is my camera...)

Previous harvest from the garden. (I planted 5 colors of carrots & seedling tomatoes)

This year I'm going to try to make an indoor hanging lettuce garden! Wish me luck! Here are my seedlings:

and here is the 'shoe holder' I made to hold my hanging lettuce garden.

I need a few more 16 oz bottles. I'll wait a little longer for the seedlings to mature enough to transplant.

I plan on cutting a hole in the bottom/side of each bottle (with lids on and tops down) then fill them with dirt. A couple seedlings will go into each. I want to hang it in my breezeway because it gets lots of sun & gets as hot as a green house!

There are fancier ways and kits to do this. If you're interested in making your own window farm visit NPR's article called Window Farming: A Do It Yourself Veggie Venture.

One of our goals for our home is to add a fence & a little green house just outside the side door... until then my outdoor garden & the indoor one will have to do! Top 'sketch' of our place show 'now' bottom is our 5 year goal... by then we'll have lived here 10 years!

Thanks for stopping. Please let me know what you think!

For the love of J♥urnals

So, it's March & I'm keeping my word for a blog a month... *ta-da*
I know (Edie Falco) Nurse Jackie says, 'only magicians and idots say ta-da' but I just love saying it; I find it it fits lots of situations...

This months blog entry will will focus on my love of Journals. I have a slight obsession with those papery delights. I love them in all their forms: writing journals, dream journals, secret diaries, travel journals, watercolor journals... anything that has lovely paper in it!

When I see an adorable blank book I think art & freedom of expression!
I want one and I want to make one.
I see potential!

I had my first secret diary when I was 7, it was pink and flowery with a lock & key!

Dear secret diary, I love you! You are my new best friend...

...

I continued to love journals over the years. I took a one-day book binding class in Minneapolis, in 1994 has opened up a world of artistic expression to me. My skill and creativity improving with each one one I make.

Since then I've moved around. A lot. In 1996 I ended up in Grand Marais, MN for a couple years. What an inspiring a place to be an aspiring artist! The fresh air, the Sawtooth Mountains to the north, to the south Lake Superior and on it my favorite North Shore coffee shop The Java Moose! Out of interest, during my two year stay, I used to bicycle up & down Hwy 61 to my many jobs. Dylan eat your heart out! Once I biked from Grand Marais to Hovland and back, surely even Dylan can't say he's done that... My favorite place to eat breakfast was called South of the Border. My next favorite place to eat was The Naniboujou. I also got to enjoy the festivities of Rendezvous Days, once, in Grand Portage where I tried moose burgers and saw my first Pow Wow... happy days!

Oh right back to blogging about art ;) I did meet some local artists and dabbled in watercolor, sketching, I even made a few journals, during this time.

As you see, in this photo, I kept one of my journals.

I nearly filled it, too, during my time up north. I also made three others and someone was interested in buying them. I bitter-sweetly sold my handiwork. I had never before sold anything. I hadn't thought about it, really. Just making them seemed enough, parting with them, however, was a new emotion for me.

I continued moving around & the chaos of moving had me pushing my skill of book binding, and art in general, further into boxes until I was just not making any. For years. *sigh*

Travel is good inspiration. New places, new jobs, new friends, new ideas, new experiences - getting married in 2003 was definitely new for me! Of course, getting married was a catalyst for another move. To Wisconsin. In 2004.

Since then we've made it our home. And, I've been searching for a community of artists to be inspired by. I've met quite a few wonderful people. But, I'd like to speak briefly about one lady I was lucky to have been able to meet, Carol Mularkey. I've had the privilege to take a couple of refresher drawing classes, with her as my teacher, at the Center for Visual Arts (CVA), in downtown Wausau. I was hoping to take more classes from Carol, sadly though, she has passed on. You can read a tribute to her, on the CVA website --> here.

One thing I learned from Carol is when we learn a skill, like drawing, the expression of that skill is the expression of our identity. We shouldn't shy away from making art that doesn't look like everyone else's. We should embrace the uniqueness of our abilities, our vision our art. Listen: A while a go, I was sitting next to my friend Donna Klimek in a lecture class. I had my lap top along and I had a screen saver of different inspiring art with some of my sketches playing. She could pick my drawings out every time! She said they were distinctly me. So that was cool to see the truth in Carol's wisdom.

The last time I saw Carol, two years ago, she offered me some sort of oniony paper that some one had given her... It's not really onion paper but it is a bit yellow, toothy and translucent. I've been been trying to find the right project for it but didn't want to "ruin" the few sheets I had.

Do you ever feel like that about paper or other supplies? You don't want to use them because you're afraid it will not turn out how you had hoped and then you feel like you've "ruined" the paper or your supplies? I wanted to use the paper gift from Carol for something special.

I also must remember to channel Shiva more often!
In order to create you must destroy...

So I've been meditating upon these lovely sheets of paper and hoping for the right project to come up. And recently I thought to myself, why not try making mini journals? That way I could get the most out of what little I have. I decided to cut down some of the papers Carol gave me and try my skill of book binding and attempt making a mini journal.

I started with the standard four pages, in each signature, mini pages in this case.

Once folded in half, they makes 8 pages... If you count front & back that's 16 surfaces to write on!

In my mini journal there is a total of 200 pages. Counting the front & back of each page, that's 400 blank surfaces to write on!

Lots of room to fill it with inspirations!

I hand stitched each signature together then gilded the edges.

I cut corrugated cardboard for the cover & scraps of fabric to cover it with.

Lastly, there's the need for decorative end pages.
I hand carved a piece of lino block and then hand stamped them myself!

I took about 3 hours to assemble.
I think it was a great idea to create a mini blank journal.
And best of all it tickles me pink!

It's so little and chubby and it fits in the palm of my hand!
What bliss! What joy!
So, I made another....

I'm excited to make a many more...

Actually they're rather easy to make. So, here is where my first tutorial will come into existence... if you're so inclined:

My love for journals and stationary (possible future blog topic?) started when I was a girl and has grown along with me. It certainly is a healthy hobby and rewarding to make something with scraps of fabric, thread, glue and whatnot from around the house. It's like totally recycling!

I actually use more than one journal at a time! None under lock and key like my first but I do have one for ideas, one for dreams, one for drawings etc...

I made a small one for lists.
I take it along when I shop.
 It's cute, see!

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you had a great read!

Fabric Design

Hi!
My new years resolution regarding my blog is to post at least once a month. This works well for me because honestly living in the country in Wisconsin there is not much happening on a daily basis to blog about. For now I'd rather spend my time reading other blogs working on my art and spending time with my family.

Give me a month to think of something to blog about ;) and with a little luck something neat will actually happen to me that is blog-worthy.

Here's the what's new:
In January I was contacted by JulieVision regarding the "Sleepy Collie" fabric I have on Spoonflower.

The fabric was just sitting there as an idea and since it was unavailable for purchase JulieVision contacted me.

We talked about her ideas and I was inspired to pick up where I'd left off and make the fabric available for purchase! But, before making fabric available for purchase it is wise to tweak the image by reducing the number of and sprucing up the colors this is to improve the quality of the image for printing onto fabric.

Then I ordered a an 8" x 8" swatch to see how it looked. When it was evident that the quality of the print was suitable I made it available for purchase.

Lucky me it only took one try! And while I was at it I worked on a few others.

I invite you to see my fabric "Sleepy Collie" in action as the clutch
"Woof" by JulieVision:

JulieVision's clutch "Woof" is for sale here:

you can also find JulieVision here:

Here are the swatches:

My design "Sleepy Collie" from watercolor to fabric.

My design "Playful Collie" from watercolor to fabric.
Buy my fabric designs here:
You can also see him and more of my art in my flickr portfolio:
Here are the other swatches I ordered along with the Collie prints:

"Pegasus Argyle"      8" x 8" swatch
This started as a digital image & became fabric...
The Cotton Knit is so soft! Needs a bit of touching up...

"Anarchy Baby!"      8" x 8" swatch
This started as a digital image & became fabric... not sure why it looks brownish. I think it is partially due to my camera work... that's why we get swatches! Maybe not such a good pattern after all.
Here are some other fabric designs of mine that I've ordered as swatches from Spoonflower:

"Plaid Yeah!"       8" x 8" swatch
The reds turned out orange & the pink looks pretty distressed...
I'm not pleased with this at all. I guess it's a good thing I got a swatch!

 "Whirlygig"     8" x 8" swatch
This one is really nice!

"Blueberry Blonde"    8" x 8" swatch
When flora & fauna meet =)

"Strawberry Blonde"    8" x 8" swatch
When flora & fauna meet =)

"Totally 80's"    8" x 8" swatch
Swatch (right) colors are a little off from digital file (left) but very cute!

"Affirmation Panel"     8" x 8" swatch
The colors are very off on the swatch (right) from the digital file (left).
I have since tweak the colors but I haven't ordered a second swatch.

"Nurse Berry" digital file on left - assembled doll on right.
I think it turned out pretty well for a first try at making a doll panel.
I have since upgrade the pattern but I have not ordered a swatch yet.

I appreciate you stopping by and taking time to check in with me and taking an interest in what is happening in my world...
